Safety Nets According to UNE-EN 1263-1:2018

Safety nets used to protect individuals from falls during construction activities within the European Union are governed by the European Standard UNE-EN 1263-1:2018, which defines the safety requirements and test methods for this temporary fall protection systems.

UNE-EN 1263-1:2018 categorizes safety net systems into four distinct types based on their installation and intended function:

  • System S: A horizontally installed safety net with a continuous perimeter rope. It must cover a minimum area of 35 m², with the shortest side exceeding 5 meters. This system is typically used in large-scale construction works such as industrial halls, bridges, and viaducts.
  • System U: A vertically positioned safety net fixed to a supporting structure. Common applications include sloped roofs, pitched surfaces, or as perimeter fall protection in the form of railing-like barriers.
  • System V: A safety net suspended from gallows-type supports, incorporating a perimeter rope for stability. It is designed for use along building edges or facades.
  • System T: A horizontally oriented net mounted on tray-type supports, suitable for positioning close to working platforms or along open edges.

In addition to the nets and fall protection systems themselves, the standard also defines performance requirements for accessory components such tying ropes and coupling ropes.

This standard specifies the essential criteria that all safety nets must meet when manufactured and installed across EU member states and associated regions. These nets are considered temporary protective equipment for use primarily on construction sites.

In the case of the formwork nets/ under slabs that are commonly used in Spanish territory, the Spanish standard UNE 81652:2024 applies.
